Tea Review - Golden Moon’s White Persian Melon
By Lainie Petersen
Name: White Persian Melon
Brand: Golden Moon
Type: White tea, flavored
Form: Loose leaf
This is a lovely blend of white tea (it looks like white peony) and Persian melon flavoring. The tea infuses to a lovely light-bright yellow color, with a sweet nose that smells remarkably like a fresh melon.
On the palate, the tea is light bodied, and while the melon flavor is definitely present, the liquor also possesses the sweet juiciness characteristic of good white teas. While there is a disturbing trend among some tea blenders to use white tea as a mere base ingredient for flavored blends, Golden Moon is not guilty of this crime. White Persian Melon is an excellent example of how a flavoring can enhance the natural flavor of a tea, rather than covering it up. Incidentally, while the melon flavoring does fade a bit after the first infusion, the tea does produce a quite tasty second infusion as well. This could be a great introductory tea for those new to quality, loose leaf teas. It would also be a great option for someone who wanted to expand their horizons, and tea palate, to include white tea.
Food Parings: As a hot or iced tea, White Persian Melon is quite delicious on its own. I’m not sure about pairing it with food as a hot tea, but believe it would go great with a light meal or snack of thinly sliced cold meats and cheeses (prosciutto and melon is a famous combo). You could also try it with some steamed or grilled asparagus.
Preparation Tips: Take the water temperature down a bit when preparing this tea. I’d go for about 185F or so and keep the steep time to about . White Persian Melon is really delicious on ice, so do try it that way, perhaps with a sprig of mint for extra flavor.
