Green Tea Aids Memory?

The litany of potential health benefits for green tea continues. For anyone who might have missed it, one of the latest areas of interest is the idea that green tea may help enhance memory.

For additional background on how tea may influence brain function, see

which discusses areas such as spatial learning, cognitive ability, and the calming effects of theanine.

The study on tea and memory was conducted by researchers at China’s Third Military Medical University and published in Molecular Nutrition & Food Research.

Researchers focused on epigallocatechin-3 gallate (EGCG), a compound found in higher concentrations in less processed teas such as green tea. EGCG is frequently highlighted for its potential benefits, as explained in

this detailed overview of EGCG and its role as a key antioxidant compound in tea
.

While much of the attention surrounding EGCG has focused on its antioxidant properties, the researchers in this study explored its possible impact on neurogenesis—the formation of new neurons in the brain.

In experiments conducted on mice, the research team examined regions of the brain involved in converting short-term memory into long-term memory. They found that EGCG appeared to increase the production of neural progenitor cells.

Two groups of mice were trained to complete memory-related tasks, with one group receiving EGCG and the other serving as a control. The group given EGCG completed the tasks more quickly, leading researchers to conclude that EGCG may enhance learning and memory by improving object recognition and spatial memory.
