Did you know it’s inspired by a real royal event? It’s true!

The Buckingham Palace Garden Party is an annual occasion where members of the public are invited to enjoy the beautiful palace gardens.

Each summer, the Queen hosts three garden parties at Buckingham Palace and one at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Scotland.

A Royal Tradition

Garden parties originally began as formal presentation events for debutantes. Over time, they evolved into a way to recognize individuals for their contributions to public service and the community.

These are not ticketed events—guests cannot apply to attend directly. Instead, invitations are extended through nominations from organizations such as government offices, churches, and other community groups connected to the Royal Family.

In this way, garden parties serve as a unique opportunity to honor people from all walks of life who have made a positive impact.

The Experience

On the day of the event, the gates open at 3:00 PM, and the celebration begins when the Royal Family arrives at 4:00 PM.

You’ll know the moment has arrived when “God Save the Queen” is played by a military band.

Guests enjoy an elegant afternoon of cakes, sandwiches, and tea while strolling through the palace gardens.

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh mingle with attendees, speaking with guests and creating a truly memorable experience.

Dress Code

As expected, proper attire is essential for such an occasion:

  • Ladies typically wear dresses with hats or fascinators
  • Gentlemen wear lounge suits or morning dress
  • Military personnel and certain guests may wear official uniforms

The Royal Family’s fashion choices are always a highlight—especially the Queen’s. At the 2017 garden party, Her Majesty wore a vibrant yellow ensemble that drew plenty of attention.
