If you traditionally celebrate Shrove Tuesday, aka Pancake Tuesday, on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday then you know it’s not Pancake Tuesday without the pancakes.
The most well known pancakes are the thick and fluffy cakes that come from a griddle or a skillet drizzled in sticky maple syrup and topped with a pat of butter. These are just pancakes to us Americans but in other countries they are simply cakes that are made on a griddle. However, if they’re not your ideal pancake then you’re not alone. Many prefer the crepe-like ones that are more renowned worldwide. They are thinner in addition to being simply short and sweet. Just a little lemon juice and some sugar is all you need.
But if you don’t feel like sugar and lemon, then you can get creative and try something new. Drizzle maple syrup or even better, golden syrup on top of those sweet folded triangles? Or if you are craving something more sweet, then why not try a hazelnut-chocolate spread or peanut butter? If you are looking for suggestions on what to adorn your Pancake Tuesday pancakes here are a small handful:
Chocolate-Peanut Butter-Melt some chocolate chips in a small bowl in increments of 30 seconds in the microwave, stirring in between each session until melted. Melt some peanut butter also in 30 second increments until it is at a liquid consistency. Drizzle both over your pancakes and top with crushed peanuts.
White Chocolate Raspberry-Fold in some raspberries and drizzle with melted white chocolate.
Your Favorite Jam-Spread any fruit jam atop your pancakes, roll them up, and add a dollop of whipped cream.
You can also have savory toppings if you don’t want sweet.
Spinach Mushroom-Saute some mushrooms and spinach in garlic butter for a creamy and zesty mushroom topping.
Ham and cheese-Use your favorite cheese whether it’s cheddar or Gruyere and some ham cold cuts. Melt cheese atop your pancake while it’s still hot and add your ham.
Pizza-Spread tomato or pizza sauce over the pancake and top with your favorite toppings like pepperoni, cheese, mushroom, black olives, or peppers.
Fold them in or roll them up however you please and enjoy!
