Tea for Feet, Rooibos for Skin

RooibosTea can do many things for our health, or so we’ve been told over the course of the past few years or so. But what can it possibly do for our feet? If you’ve ever had the misfortune to encounter a pair of shoes that are past their prime you might have a clue.

As it turns out, tea might come in handy when it comes to banishing – or at least reducing the severity of – that dreaded malady known as stinky feet. According to tea expert and author Diana Rosen, making a footbath with warm water and tea, preferably a lightly scented variety, can be helpful when it comes to battling foot odor. Rooibos, or redbush, is not a type of tea, at least not in the strictest sense of the word, but this popular South African herbal beverage has also won some acclaim for possessing a variety of alleged health benefits. Among them, according to recently released results of two scientific studies, are the ability to reduce the risk of skin cancer.

The studies were both funded in part by the South African Rooibos Council. One was conducted by the Medical Research Council’s Promec unit and the other by the Oxidative Stress Research Centre at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. Researchers suggest that the polyphenols in rooibos might help to moderate the immune system, which, in turn, may be of some use in preventing a response by the immune system to UVB that can result in tumors.

Researchers who conducted the CPUT study discovered that green (unfermented) redbush reduced the number of tumors found in mice by 75 percent. The results from fermented rooibos was 91 percent. For more about the studies, be sure to check out this article from the South African press.
