Review: When friends from the UK visited last Fall, they brought a box of Yorkshire Gold tea with them. I was suspicious, but not wishing to be impolite, I accepted a cup of “Yorkshire tea” made with milk and sugar.
To my surprise I rather liked it.
Yes, it is a paper bagged tea (and the tea bags have no strings, so be sure to keep a spoon handy to prevent burnt fingers). The bags contain a blend of Assam and African teas, specially formulated to appeal to the British tea-palate. Yorkshire Gold is the “luxury” tea in the Yorkshire range, produced by Taylors of Harrogate, a well-established tea company in the UK.
True, my preference is for loose leaf teas with no additives, but I immediately noticed that the tea really stood out even in the presence of milk and sugar. Yorkshire smooth, spicy, warm and rich. I tried it a few more times after that with a bit of milk only, and continued to enjoy it.
Like most teas blended for the British market, Yorkshire Gold is at its best when prepared with milk. I tried it on its own (steeped for four minutes as per the instructions on the box) and found that it became too bitter for my taste. I did a bit of experimenting, and found that for the best results when drinking black, the tea bag should only be infused for about 30 seconds.
Incidentally, I am not crazy about this tea on ice. I find that the malty qualities of Assam can create “funky” flavors when iced and Yorkshire Gold is no exception. Stick to preparing this tea hot, with milk and sweetener, and you should enjoy it very well.
