Just a year ago, I moved from one house to another. Now, a year later, it’s time to move again—but this time, I’m heading to a completely new state.
One of my main concerns is how to safely transport my mugs and tea kettle. If you’re preparing for a move, here are some helpful tips for packing your teaware and tea essentials.
Mugs and Teacups
Whether your teaware is made from ceramic, glass, or bone china, it needs to be packed carefully to prevent breakage during transit.
- Wrap each mug or teacup individually using bubble wrap or packing paper
- If using paper, apply multiple layers for added protection
- Line the bottom of the box with cushioning material
- Fill empty spaces with crumpled paper or packing peanuts
Seal the box securely and clearly label it FRAGILE.
Tea Kettle
Your tea kettle deserves special attention before packing. Start by cleaning it—especially if it hasn’t been used recently.
If limescale has built up (a residue caused by minerals in hard water), it’s best to descale the kettle. You can use household ingredients or follow this step-by-step kettle descaling guide.
For packing:
- Use the original box if available
- Otherwise, select a snug-fitting box
- Wrap the kettle in bubble wrap or packing material
- Add extra cushioning around it to prevent movement
Tea
Don’t forget your tea! Any tea you plan to keep should travel with care.
- Store loose tea in airtight containers such as tea chests for organized tea storage or tea tins and canisters
- Pack tea alongside pantry items if unopened
- Keep frequently used teas easily accessible for your first day in your new home
