Every year, billions of pounds of trash are sent to landfills to take up space and sit there for generations. We can try to reduce the amount of trash being sent to the landfill by upcycling old things like teaware.
What is Upcycling?
Upcycling helps give new life to old items that would have otherwise been tossed into the trash by taking used materials and giving it an entirely new purpose.
For example, if you decide to retire some old teacups or teapots, you can use them to make some new garden decor. Fill them with soil and plant some flower seeds or plant succulents like cactuses.
Other ways to upcycle old teaware include:
Making candles with old tea cups or mugs.
Painting old teacups, mugs, or teapots and creating new artwork. This activity is especially ideal for children to get creative.
Some next level upcycling would be to make lamps or clocks using old teacups, saucers, and teapots. It does involve handyman skills so if you know how to use proper wiring or have a professional electrician on hand it’s perfect.
You can also upcycle food to help reduce food waste. Such examples include taking some bread that’s been in the pantry for too long and making bread pudding or using very ripe bananas in a banana bread recipe.
Even if you only upcycle something once, every little bit helps. It’s a way of doing our part to help make the world a better place.
