Grow Your Own Tea

As the second most popular beverage in the world, it stands to reason that tea is grown globally in truly massive quantities. While there are a number of prominent tea-producing nations all around the globe, the most significant of these in terms of pure volume are China, India, and various high-altitude regions across Africa.

At the far opposite end of the spectrum is tea production on its most modest scale: growing your own tea at home. That’s right—given the right climate conditions, acidic soil, and a little patience, nearly anyone can cultivate actual tea plants in their backyard or a container. Of course, if you are planning to harvest enough to fully supply your own daily drinking habits, you should be aware that it will take a considerable amount of time, space, and meticulous drying and processing effort to do so.

If you are more in the mood for experimenting with tea plants just for the fun of it, or simply want to add a few beautiful, glossy evergreen shrubs to your garden landscape, you are definitely not alone. For some shared experiences, tips, and photos from everyday gardeners, check out the community-sourced tea cultivation discussions on the TeaChat forum. For even more expert perspective on establishing your own backyard plot, take a look at the classic growing insights over at the T Ching tea blog archive, originally shared by its founder and resident tea-growing hobbyist, Michelle Rabin.

If you are ready to try your hand at growing your own real tea, you are going to need one of two things: raw tea seeds, or—if you want to get a major head start on the multi-year process—established tea plant seedlings. Either way, you are in luck.

Here is a quick directory of specialized botanical suppliers and nurseries that can help you source authentic Camellia sinensis varieties to kickstart your home garden:
